Attacker Shot and Killed After Victim Tried to Escape.

Lamar County, Mississippi – A man was shot and killed during an altercation Sunday evening in Lumberton.

According to Sheriff Danny Rigel, deputies were dispatched to a location on Little Black Rock Rd. at around 7 p.m. for a report about a fight. A short time later, another call came in to report a shooting had occurred at the same location.

The fight was over, and one man lay on the ground when deputies pulled up to the scene. Kneeling over the man on the ground were two other individuals attempting to administer CPR. When they saw police arrive, one of the men identified himself as the shooter.

The mortally wounded man, 31-year-old Henry Johnson, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to County Coroner Cody Creel.

After investigating the scene, and talking with several witnesses who saw the altercation, deputies were told that Johnson was the attacker in the fight. The witnesses said that the fight had begun at one location, and when the victim tried to distance himself from the altercation and his attacker, Johnson followed him and continued the attack.

“(Johnson) kept beating up on him,” Rigel said, going on to say that the victim had access to a gun in the glove box of the truck he was attempting to flee in. “The guy came running at him and he told him to stop but he wouldn’t, so he shot him twice — and then performed CPR on him.”

Sheriff Rigel said the shooting appeared to be in self-defense, but the investigation is ongoing and once the autopsy is completed the case will be turned over to the District Attorney where the case will be examined by a grand jury.

No charges are reported to be filed against the victim at this time.

The shooter in this situation appears to have done everything he could to get away from his attacker and put distance between himself and the threat. But unfortunately, he still needed a weapon to defend himself.
